Stuart Shirley of Broomfield, Colorado is the winner of the eleventh annual Ellwood Group, Inc. Metallurgy Scholarship. He is a junior at Colorado School of Mines. Stuart is majoring in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering and carries a 3.57 GPA.
Stuart was selected as the recipient because he is an exceptional student, who possesses a true interest in heavy metals manufacturing. Additionally, he has relevant intern experience in a forging and fabrication shop. Stuart will intern at Ellwood City Forge (ECF) this summer and will have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to both our product and process improvement.
Colin Galey, Metallurgy Manager at ECF, who was a prior Metallurgy Scholarship recipient, will mentor Stuart. Colin received his Bachelor’s degree from Case Western Reserve University and is currently attending the University of Pittsburgh for his Master’s degree in metallurgy. Stuart will also work with Rachel Lukas, Metallurgical Engineer at ECF, who was also a past recipient of the scholarship. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in metallurgy from the University of Pittsburgh. Additionally, Stuart will have the opportunity to interact with other Ellwood engineers and metallurgists, including Stephen Rooney, Metallurgical Engineer at EMT and former scholarship recipient.
The scholarship will be presented to Stuart by Marie Russo, EGI Director of HR, at Colorado School of Mines in March 2018.
EGI will also award $5,000 scholarships each to Benjamin Miller, Brooklyn Carlson, and Benjamin Eller, who were finalists for the scholarship. Benjamin Miller is attending Iowa State University and majoring in Materials Engineering. Brooklyn Carlson is attending the University of Wisconsin – Madison and majoring in Materials Science and Engineering and Benjamin Eller is attending Virginia Tech and majoring in Materials Science and Engineering.
