John R. Paules, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Ellwood Group, Inc. (EGI) to Retire

Effective September 30, 2016, John R. Paules will retire from EGI after 19 years of service. John has agreed to participate in metallurgy project work going forward as a consultant and advisor, and we are grateful for his willingness to continue to share his expertise.

In 1997, John began his EGI career as General Manager of Ellwood Materials Technology (EMT) where he was responsible for the research and new product development efforts involving open and closed die forgings as well as iron castings. Upon his promotion to the newly created position of CTO in 2015, John expanded research and development across all of EGI by assisting in technical service to customers, developing a talented EGI team of metallurgists, and integrating state of the art metallurgical software and lab equipment.

We shall miss his vast technical expertise, dedication, and subtle sense of humor on a day-to-day basis. He will be remembered as the consummate professional, so generous in mentoring and assisting customers and his EGI colleagues.

On behalf of the EGI Shareholders, Board of Directors, and our 1,900 employees, we thank John for his impressive contributions and wish him and his wife, Cynthia, a long, healthy and happy retirement.

Ellwood Group, Inc. (EGI) Promotes Michael P. Barrett to President of Ellwood National Forge as Glenn Fegely Retires

Effective July 1, 2016, Mike Barrett was promoted as President of Ellwood National Forge (ENF) in Irvine, PA. Before moving to ENF as Executive Vice President on September 9, 2015, Mike served for twelve years at the Ellwood Crankshaft Group (ECG) in various roles including ECG Vice President of Operations, Ellwood National Crankshaft General Manager, Director of Quality, Director of Sales & Marketing, and as Controller. He served as Controller for Ellwood Texas Forge Houston from 1996-2003, and began his 22-year career with Ellwood in 1994 as Assistant Controller of Ellwood City Forge, Ellwood City, PA. Prior to that, Mike worked for Cooper Power Systems, Rockwell International, and Ernst & Young.

Mike holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting and Business Administration from Thiel College, Greenville, PA. Mike is actively involved in his community including leadership roles in the Boys Scouts of America, Family Services, and the Warren Rotary Club. He and his wife, Melanie, reside in Warren, PA and are the parents of two daughters.

Mike replaces Glenn Fegely, who has retired after 27 years of service–13 years as President of ENF and 14 years in various roles at Ellwood City Forge, Ellwood City, PA. The EGI Board of Directors thanks Glenn for his strong leadership of ENF, including his leadership of the transition of the company from National Forge Company ownership to Ellwood National Forge in 2003.

Denny Adelung joins Ellwood Group, Inc. (EGI) as Director of Business Development, Oil and Gas

Ellwood Group, Inc. (EGI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Denny Adelung as Director of Business Development, Oil and Gas, located in Houston, Texas. Denny will report to COO, Ben Huffman, and work in collaboration with EGI operating division Presidents to strategically coordinate and enhance the integrated delivery of products and services to Ellwood customers.

Prior to joining EGI, Denny spent over 40 years working in the Oil and Gas sector. His extensive experience both domestically and internationally includes 30 years with Schlumberger, retiring as US GeoMarket Manager, and 8 years with National Oilwell Varco (NOV) where he worked as Senior VP for Operations and Sales and retired as Senior VP Global Accounts. Denny attended the University of Texas and was a faculty member of the NOV/Purdue University Training program. He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, American Association of Drilling Engineers, American Petroleum Institute, and Independent Association of Drilling Contractors.

Denny and his wife make their home in Sugarland, Texas.

Dana Beyeler Named NDIA Representative to the NATO Industrial Advisory Group

Beyeler is member of the Industry Group reporting to NATO’s Conference of National Armaments Directors

ELLWOOD CITY, PA. – Mr. Dana Beyeler, Senior Vice President – Defense Engagement, ELLWOOD GROUP, Inc.(EGI) was recently appointed by the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics as the National Defense Industrial Association representative to the US Delegation of the NATO Industrial Advisory Group (NIAG).

The NIAG, first established in 1968, is a high-level consultative and advisory body of senior industrialists from NATO member countries, reporting directly to NATO’s Conference of National Armaments Directors (CNAD). Its responsibilities include providing a forum for the free exchange of views on industrial aspects of defense research, development and procurement within the Alliance; providing the CNAD with industrial advice on how to foster better government-to-industry and industry-to-industry armaments cooperation; and assisting NATO’s Main Armaments Groups in exploring opportunities for international collaboration.

Mr. Beyeler also serves as a member of the Precision Strike Association Board of Directors, as well as an active member of the NDIA’s International and Manufacturing Divisions. Prior to joining the defense industrial complex in 1976 Mr. Beyeler served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Beyeler’s career reflects ever increasing levels of responsibility as a military officer and as a civilian at both the divisional operational level as well as advancing broader corporate objectives.

2015-2016 EGI Metallurgy $15,000 Scholarship Winner Announced

This is to announce that Rachel Lukas is the winner of the ninth annual Ellwood Group, Inc. Metallurgy Scholarship. She is a junior at the University of Pittsburgh and is majoring in Material Science and Engineering; Rachel carries a 3.36 GPA.

The scholarship award ceremony will take place at the University of Pittsburgh during the 1st Quarter of 2016. Along with Brendan Connolly, EQS Operations Engineer, the scholarship award will be presented to Rachel by Marie Russo, EGI Director of Human Resources. Rachel will complete an internship at an Ellwood business unit during the summer of 2016.

Rachel possesses previous internship experience working as a Process Engineer. She provided metallurgical and metallographic support for a new alloy’s process development, as well as performed other research and development projects. Rachel is self-driven and possesses a raw enthusiasm for metallurgy.

EGI will also award $5,000 scholarships to Jacob Wolfman and to Alex Roach, who were finalists for the scholarship. Jacob is a junior at the University of Pittsburgh and is majoring in Material Science and Engineering. Jacob interned with North American Forgemasters (NAF) during the summer of 2015 and will be returning in January 2016 to intern at NAF. Alex is a junior at the University of Alabama and is majoring in Metallurgical and Material Engineering. He also was offered an internship within Ellwood during the summer 2016.

All three students were provided with tours of Ellwood’s manufacturing facilities in New Castle, PA and had the opportunity to meet and speak with several of the Company’s metallurgists, engineers and other representatives.

Bob Rumcik, 2015 ASM Distinguished Life Membership Award

Bob Rumcik (EGI board of directors and retired president, EQS) was named to the ASM Distinguished Life Membership award at a ceremony at the ASM’s annual meeting in Columbus, Ohio on October 6, 2015. ASM Distinguished Life Membership is designated to those leaders in the field of material science who have devoted their time, knowledge and abilities to the advancement of the materials industries. The award was presented to Bob with the following citation:

“For visionary leadership in pioneering the successful development and commercialization of ladle refining technology in steel making and building two companies, Ellwood Quality Steels, and Ellwood National Steel into the recognized market leaders.”

9th Annual Metallurgy Scholarship Announcement

Ellwood Group, Inc. (EGI) is pleased to announce our 9th Annual Metallurgy Scholarship, which is awarded to talented and dedicated metallurgical students to encourage their pursuit of a career within the steel and heavy metal industry.

The scholarship is open to undergraduate college students in their junior year currently majoring in the field of metallurgy/material science at selected and accredited four-year colleges and universities. In the interest of reaching a broader, more rounded pool of students, the scholarship opportunities and criteria remain expanded, to include a minimum GPA requirement 2.75.

A $15,000 scholarship will be given to the winner and up to three additional $5,000 scholarships will be available to well-qualified students. The scholarship includes a paid internship at an EGI business unit in the USA during the summer of 2016.

Our goal is to encourage more students to choose metallurgy as their field of study and to recruit more interns and graduates into the industry, specifically to EGI.

Along with the completed application, the applicant packet must be received by EGI on or before October 5, 2015.

Shariee DeCooman Announced as Corporate Controller and Treasurer of Ellwood Group, Inc.

I am pleased to announce the promotion of Shariee DeCooman to Corporate Controller and Treasurer of Ellwood Group, Inc., effective immediately. With 20 years of service, Shariee began employment at EGI as an Accountant in 1995 and was promoted to Corporate Controller in 1999.

She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Grove City College and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Robert Morris College, graduating summa cum laude. Shariee is a life-long resident of Ellwood City, PA.

Rich Davis Announced as CFO for Ellwood Group, Inc.

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Rich Davis as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Ellwood Group, Inc., effective as soon as feasible given Rich’s Ellwood City Forge (ECF) responsibilities.

Rich will report to me and be responsible for playing a key role in developing strategic plans and providing financial leadership and direction for EGI and its subsidiaries. He will have direct oversight for EGI’s Finance/Accounting and Information Technology Departments and indirect oversight of similar functions as the Business Units.

Since 2007, Rich as has served as Director of Finance at ECF and was heavily involved with the 2014 acquisition of Ellwood Ohio Machine. He previously worked as Controller for Ellwood National Forge from 2005-2006 and as Assistant Controller and Senior Cost Analyst at Ellwood Quality Steels from 1997-2004.

Rich holds both a Master’s of Business Administration degree and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Youngstown State University, where he majored in Accounting. Rich and his wife, Paula, and their three children reside in Poland, Ohio.

Ellwood Group, Inc. (EGI) Promotes John R. Paules to Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

Effective March 1, 2015, EGI is pleased to announce the promotion of John R. Paules as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Ellwood Group, Inc., reporting to the CEO of the company. Working in cooperation with EGI’s operating divisions, he will have responsibility to coordinate the development and deployment of EGI’s metallurgical “know how” across the company. This includes helping to make strategy for acquisitions and capital investments, conducting research and development, assisting in technical service to customers, and the recruiting and training of new and existing EGI metallurgists. Bjorn Gabrielsson, EGI Vice President of Steelmaking Technology, will continue to provide technical leadership of melting operations at Ellwood Quality Steels and Ellwood National Steel.

Currently, John has since 1997 been General Manager of Ellwood Materials Technology (EMT), where he is responsible for research and new product development efforts involving open die forgings, closed die forgings, and iron castings.

In his 17 years with EGI, John has contributed significantly to a wide array of metallurgical initiatives including development and commercialization of patented abrasion resistant alloy steels, design of large ingots and forging practices to produce open die forgings with superior internal quality, and alloy and process developments resulting in improved tool and die steels, crankshafts, and other forgings for critical applications.

Prior to joining EGI, John spent over 20 years with companies involved in steel-related technologies, including Berry Metal and Bethlehem Steel, with experience in production, quality control, research, and new product development.

John is active in a number of industry societies, including ASM, ASTM, AIST, and FIA. He is a former chairman of the Mechanical Working and Steel Processing Division of the Iron and Steel Society (now AIST), and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation of the Forging Industry Association (FIA).

John holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Metallurgy and Materials Science from Lehigh University. He is the author of over 20 technical papers, has presented at numerous international conferences, is a Registered Professional Engineer, and has been granted two U. S. Patents.

John and his wife, Cynthia, make their home in Cranberry Township, PA.
